” ‘Wag mo ‘kong kakainin..wag mo kong kakainin!”
- Bubuy
“….Vegeratian kaya ako”
- Anna
These are just few of my favorite lines in the animated film Dayo. In its promotional trailers, it is saying somehow that Dayo is a must seen movie. When I watched the movie, I realized that I was not an exaggeration or a bluff when they said it. It really is a one of a kind movie. By being technical, we all know that it still has some flaws and it’s not perfect but as you watch along, you will be amazed by Pinoy talents.
As a Filipino, I related to the plot of the story very well, although I don’t have a Manananggal for a friend but I can relate to the movie’s deeper meaning: Facing your problems. Bubuy was introduced as a boy being bullied by his classmates and instead of fighting back, he just let himslef being bullied. A certain point in his life that forced him to fight for what he thinks is special and that changed his life forever.
Truly, the movie Dayo will be a classic for Filipinos. It amazed me when the movie showed Pinoy Pop Culture such as the giant wooden spoon and forks displayed on the wall, Last supper painting, fiesta banderitas in Bubuy’s event in school and many more. Another thing impressed me is that they showed lower Filipino mythology in a never before seen way. Filipino mythology or folklore is famous and is only visualized by passing stories from our lolos and lolas(granparents). Dayo introduced those elements in a astounding kind of way. It balanced showing a fantasy theme at the same time maintaining the Filipino feel.
Dayo is a simple story yet there are countless of things to learn. I believe that people of all ages should see this. You wont get bored in watching the film because you will be amazed by the sceneries and background, not to mention the funny dialogues. It’s also a good movie to explore to foreigners as well, because they will know more about our culture. Dayo is purely pinoy and I’m happy to say that I am a Filipino.
